Dog Humping And Dominance
What To Do If The Penis Falls Out Of The Sheath
Having lived with thousands of neutered and spayed dogs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the last five years we have found the notion that dog humping is used to decide dominance to be false.
Some very submissive dogs will draw the line when any dog tries to hump them. By very submissive we mean dogs who go on there backs and urinate when another dog begins to sniff them.
Many dominant dogs allow submissive dogs to hump them. Their is one dominant Akita male who allows a submissive Golden Doodle female to vigorously hump him and literally walk on his back if we let her. No other dog, male or female can even begin to dream about doing that to him.
Most fixed dogs over 8 years old do not hump nor will they allow themselves to be humped. It seems as though an 'expert' said that dog humping was a sign of dominance and other 'experts' bought into the notion without first testing it.
We do however feel that humping should be discouraged especially among neutered males. There is a small possibility that the sheath surrounding the penis could roll right back just beyond the scrotum and will not return to its original state if humping is sustained for some time.
If this happens to your neutered male dog please see your vet. If however you are not queasy you can put some ice in a plastic grocery bag and wrap the bag in a clean dry towel. Gently place the towel on the scrotum and hold until you see the pink penis shrink and go back into the sheath. Do not leave the towel on for more than 10 minutes. If blood begins to drip or the dog becomes agitated go to your vet immediately.
